Follow the room, not an afternoon rule

A busy afternoon may mean more browsing, back-to-back salon appointments or an active gym floor. Look at what changes in your room before changing the soundtrack. If the main difference is more conversation, a brighter musical texture may work better than a higher setting. There is no single afternoon genre that fits every business.

Shortlist three levels of rhythmic character

Daylight disco offers upbeat instrumental music with playful basslines. Good energy takes a steadier house direction with bright rhythms. Golden hour brings warm instrumental soul when you want a groove with less drive. Compare the samples at one setting and choose the character that matches the activity, rather than treating them as a ladder of loudness.

Test at the busiest point of service

Try the music where staff take payment, discuss an appointment or answer a training question. Include the noise normally present at that time: dryers, equipment, doors and other conversations. If people have to raise their voices, lower the setting. Do not make the busiest listening position comfortable at the expense of a quieter seat beside a speaker.

Keep the change recognisable for the team

Agree which station and approximate setting belong to the busier period, and what should prompt a quieter choice. That makes the programme easier to follow across a shift change. A brighter selection can give the afternoon its own character without asking each member of staff to rebuild the music from scratch.

Plan the downshift before the rush ends

When customers thin out, the same rhythm can feel more exposed. Compare a warmer welcoming choice or a softer unwinding collection for the handover. Check the change from the customer's position after the room quietens. Use the full-day planning guide to connect this peak period with opening and later service rather than leaving the afternoon setting in place by default.

A good place to start.
